Instead of cleaning up without any real goal, clean up with a friend or partner. Make it into a competition to see who can clean up a certain section of the house fastest or who’s bedroom can be tidier.

Take care of the biggest decluttering task first

Is 90% of your home’s mess located in one room? Instead of leaving the biggest job for last, clean up and declutter the messiest room in your home first. This way, all of the other rooms will seem quick and simple by comparison.

Listen to music (or sing) while you clean up

Do you find cleaning boring? Instead of listening to the buzzing of a vacuum cleaner, put on a set of headphones and listen to your favourite songs. Music makes cleaning up much more bearable, especially if you’ll need plenty of time.

There’s no need to sing like Mary Poppins, but even humming a song to yourself can be enough to make the otherwise boring task of decluttering your home a lot of fun, especially when you’ve turned it into a game or competition.

Use decluttering as an opportunity to rediscover things

In Mary Poppins, the Banks children rediscover many of their toys as they clean their bedroom with Mary Poppins. Even if you’ve outgrown children’s toys, cleaning up is a great opportunity to rediscover outfits and other possessions.

From books you’ve started reading but never finished to clothes you’ve bought but rarely worn, treat each clean-up as an opportunity to rediscover items you’ve spent the last weeks, months or years forgetting about.

Make cleaning up and decluttering a habit

Can you declutter with a snap of your fingers? Probably not, but when you make it a habit, you’ll find that cleaning up and decluttering your home takes barely any time at all.

Instead of spending hours cleaning your home once a week, spend a few minutes of every day decluttering. The smaller the mess becomes, the less time it will take you to clean up, sort and store.
